Some days, when my little flying pink elephant friends are talking to me , I start to think that maybe I am a little crazy – or perhaps I should stop drinking so heavily at breakfast. Then I will have a day like today when I watched a short film on YouTube about some guys that put a vegetable garden in the bed of an old Dodge truck. Videos like this make me realize that I am not the craziest person I know.

Wicked Delicate is the name of the film company that made the video. They are claiming to be sane, but have now provided video proof that they are not.

TRUCK FARM is a Wicked Delicate film + food project. Combining green roof technology, organic compost + heirloom seeds, we are creating a living story about growing a little food in a big city. Each “episode” is a partial excerpt of a larger film project, slated for completion in fall 2009. Visit www.wickedelicate.com to learn more, and stay tuned!

So the next time the little pink elephants tell me to do something, then I am going to listen. I could be famous on the internet for 15 minutes or so. Maybe these guys should get together with the biomass fuel guy and they could grow the fuel for the truck, in the truck! It could be self contained and run forever on just CO2 and SUNSHINE!

Since we all know that the whole US population only wants to buy Toyota Priuses, why has General Motors now run out of trucks? This is kinda weird folks. The exact vehicle that our fearless leaders claim that nobody wants are now hard to get. My head spins in confusion.

But it shouldn’t, and here is why -

You can’t fit the average family with 2.3 kids and all their gear into a Prius

If you are fortunate enough to have three children that need to be in carseats then you need a three row vehicle (minivan or SUV) or a full size truck just to get the seats to fit, let alone any crap

Gas is cheap again and the buying public has the memory of a goldfish. They have already forgotten that prices will go back up

GM is so competent that they just went bankrupt. Enough said.

Trucks are cool in a way that a little compact car will never be….

So I am sure I could have taken those little points and made a book out of it, but I am lazy. Why not tell me how lazy I am in the comment form below?

Chrysler has announced that they are shutting down the St. Louis truck plant, a week after they announced they were opening it. Awesome planning.

DETROIT — One week after announcing it would open the St. Louis Dodge Ram plant, Chrysler Group LLC said today that it would idle the plant July 10 and keep it closed “contingent upon volumes.”

The Ram factory in Fenton, Mo., will open June 29 as scheduled, along with six other Chrysler plants. But Chrysler will close the plant before the summer shutdown starts and work “with the UAW to address the manpower implications in a socially responsible manner,” the company said today in a statement.

Tesla Motors is not my favorite car company. I think it is a bunch of hype around a little roadster filled with batteries. Tesla did nothing more than package it up nice and sell below cost – hardly innovation. The real Nikola Tesla actually did many astounding things with electricity and with electric cars – check this link – that many engineers today would sell their mothers to do. Tesla the car company also notes on their website that they think Nikola Tesla would approve of their car – failing to note the irony in Nikola Tesla’s mudslinging battles with Edison over the virtues of Nikola Tesla’s Alternating Current electricity versus Edison’s Direct Current. The Tesla car uses direct current batteries to power it – Edison’s choice.

Now we have word that Tesla got its government loan to develop a car using the same stuff it has already developed. Huh? Can I get a loan to learn how to walk, talk and not crap my pants? Now Tesla has a loan to match it ridiculous valuation – they have doubled their money! – and so the cure of the environment is now complete. Ahh, happy times. To be fair, Tesla has delivered hundreds of cars. Hundreds. The US market for cars and trucks and suvs is currently around 10 million units per year, so if we divide 500 by 10,000,000 we get a …. really small number. So the impact of the Tesla is less than a rounding error of current automotive emissions. It sure is a good thing that people are so darn proud of it.

Tesla will soon be in another game. A real game, where the fanboys who love them so much on the internet will soon have to reverse course and start calling a spade a spade. The realities of making a niche sports car are much different than the realities of making a mid-volume sedan. Sports cars aren’t driven often and usually not for long distances. The electric car can fit this bill. How many high mileage Ferraris do you ever see for sale? A family sedan is typically driven daily, every day, to and from work, soccer practice and to go get groceries. This car needs to be reliable – very reliable. A little inconvenience in the sports car will become a major nightmare when you can’t get to work in your family car. This is the trick that is the hard part – make it good, make it cheap and get people to buy it. Toyota’s spectacular growth has been built on this – I don’t personally think that Tesla has a chance. Neither do some engineers.

If Tesla was really clever, they would start a racing series and open it to all the other manufacturers. It seems strange to me that will all this hype about electric cars for so long, there never was a series that got off the ground. Leave it to the motorcycle guys to do it first – there will be a motorcycle series as part of the FIM world championships in 2010.

My rant is over – what do you think?
